"Hey, Kevin, are you all right in there?" Ben asked, wondering what was keeping the older man in the bathroom for the past hour.
"Yeah, I'll be fine once I barf..." Kevin called back. Alarmed, Ben pried the door open and forced himself inside.
"What's making you throw up?"
"It's not making me throw up, I just feel kind of...bleh," Kevin explained, not bothering to face Ben. "I feel like I'm going to throw up, but it's not coming."
"You've been spending a lot of time in the bathroom the past two weeks," Ben pointed out. "Was it because you're this sick?"
"Well..." Kevin frowned, and pushed himself up from the toilet. "Not every time. A lot of it was...well, I had to pee a lot."
"Oh. Um. Do you think there's something wrong with you?"
"What's that supposed to mean, Tennyson?"
"Well, I don't know. You're throwing up and peeing a lot. I don't know what that means, but it might be an illness. Maybe we should get you checked out or something...."
Kevin studied Ben's expression. "You're going to keep bugging me about it until I agree to go see a doctor, aren't you." It wasn't meant to be a question. The two men had been together since Ben had turned sixteen, and it was no secret that they both worried about each other. Ben nodded.
"Fine. We'll go see a doctor."
The doctor, a Necrofrigian, studied his charts carefully, seeming to be considering just how to tell the pair the news. "You are what your species calls 'homosexuals', correct?" He asked Kevin.
"Most of the time, we're just called 'gay'," Ben answered for him. Kevin frowned. He'd never liked either term.
"So then it is correct to say that you've had intercourse with a seed giver?" the doctor pressed on.
"What the heck's a 'seed giver'?" Kevin asked. Ben elbowed him and wiggled his eyebrows. "Oooh. ...Last time I ever let you top me, Tennyson. Did that make me sick?"
The doctor crossed his legs and leaned towards Kevin. "Are you familiar with your Osmosion eccentricies? Your ability to absorb...you know how far it goes, right?"
"What do you mean, doc?"
"I mean that your species allows both males and females to reproduce, because of your ability to copy anything you touch."
"Reproduce?" Ben started laughing uproariously and Kevin continued to try to puzzle out exactly what the alien meant.
Then, it hit him.
"Oh hell....YOU MEAN I'M KNOCKED UP?!!!"
"You still don't look pregnant," Ben said, lifting Kevin's shirt and studying his stomach. "Still really nice abs....maybe it won't ruin your girlish figure after all."
"Are you trying to piss me off or to suck up, since this whole thing is your fault?"
"Are you really that mad? We'd been talking about having kids..."
"Yeah, but the usual way! We'd get a surrogate or....or I don't know, you'd go all Big Chill again and lay some more eggs. I am not supposed to be the girl in this relationship...which is what I told you when you started trying to get me to let you be dominate," Kevin grabbed a pillow off the couch and threw it at Ben. Ben let it bounce off and picked it up from the floor.
"I'm sorry, Kevin, I know you hate this, but....well, look at it this way. It takes a really strong body to handle a pregnancy. There's all that stuff you go through...I went through it before, and you'll come out fine."
"Yours was a super accelerated pregnancy. Mine's more like a human pregnancy." Ben couldn't really argue against this point, and so he tried to change the subject.
"When do we tell them?"
"Tell who what?"
"The other plumbers. My family. Your mom. ...Gwen."
Kevin groaned. "I really don't feel like dealing with that right now...besides, the book said something about being more likely to miscarry in the first trimester, so a lot of people don't tell anyone until that's over...just so they don't jinx it."
"What To Expect When You're Expecting. I got a copy shipped here after we found out." Ben smirked. "What? What's so funny, Ben?" Kevin demanded.
"Nothing, Kev...just starting to think you're really looking forward to this."
"Shut up." Ben nodded, but the smirk didn't fade. Ben knew he was right - Kevin, for all his griping and complaining, was actually very happy this had happened.
Kevin was starting to feel better now. The morning sickness had begun to fade (though certainly wasn't gone yet), both he and Ben were enjoying the sudden increase of sexual desires, and he was starting to come to terms with the idea that he was going to have a baby.
It was still a strange concept to him, but it was lessened significantly by the fact he'd seen his own boyfriend pregnant many years ago. But they had neglected finding a doctor, and both Kevin and Ben were worried that if they didn't do something soon, something would go wrong. And that's what brought them to Cooper's door at four in the morning.
"Guys?" Cooper answered, rubbing his eyes. "Do you know what time it is?"
"Yeah, yeah, that's not what's important," Kevin insisted. He suddenly grabbed Cooper around the neck. "If you tell anyone about this, especially Gwen, I will kill you...."
"Kevin, let him go," Ben insisted, putting a hand on one of Kevin's arms. He relaxed and released the blonde.
Cooper yawned. "Well, what do you guys need?"
"Umm..." Ben waited for Kevin to explain. When he refused to say anything, Ben took the lead. "Kevin's alien abilities uh...well..." he forced the next part out as a jumbled mess "He'spregnantwithmybabyisthereanythingyo
Cooper blinked at him a few times. "I'm sorry, Ben, I think I just dozed off while you were explaining. I could have sworn I heard you say that Kevin's pregnant." Ben and Kevin's expressions told Cooper very plainly that he hadn't misheard. "....you're pregnant. ...Wow. What did Gwen say?"
"We already told you, she doesn't know and you ain't tellin' her," Kevin insisted.
"We need someone smart to figure out if everything's going all right. We were hoping you could help," Ben explained. "Well, I have a sort of ultrasound machine....it'll work, but you guys really should go to the med bay. A doctor there would be better."
"Gwen and Grandpa Max both have access to those records," Ben sighed, "and Kevin doesn't want them to find out for another few weeks."
Cooper sighed. "All right. I don't like lying to Gwen, but I'll give you two a hand. Come in," he ushered them inside and pointed Kevin to a chair in the corner.
Cooper's eyes glowed blue for a moment as a machine flew towards them, stopping beside Kevin. Cooper grabbed an attachment on the side that looked almost like a vacuum cleaner's hose. "Shirt up," He commanded. Kevin lifted his shirt slightly. Cooper switched a screen on above the machine. The screen was almost entirely black, until the hose he was holding connected with Kevin's skin. A sound almost like a horse's gallop filled the room.
"Does that mean something's wrong?" Ben asked. Cooper shook his head.
"Nope. That's the baby's heartbeat. They're supposed to be that strong," he fiddled with the instrument, finally clearing in on what appeared to be about the size of a bean, with barely more definition than that shape. "...Wow."
"What?" Kevin and Ben exclaimed in unison, worried Cooper had found something wrong.
"I thought you two were messing with me but...." he pointed at the bean shaped figure, "That's your baby. Congratulations....." Cooper smirked at Kevin, finally getting an insult in after knowing each other years, "Mommy."
